This is a classic forest-to-lake payoff: about 7.4 miles total (out and back) and roughly 2,300–2,400 feet of gain to a deep, emerald alpine tarn tucked beneath the cliffs of Klahhane Ridge. Expect a consistent uphill grind from the start, mostly under heavy tree cover, with limited views until you reach the lake.

The trail begins at the Heart O’ the Hills trailhead just before the Hurricane Ridge Road entrance station. You’ll cross Ennis Creek on a footbridge early and then settle into a sustained climb on packed dirt with some rocky and rooty sections. The lower forest is lush—ferns, mosses, and fungi are everywhere—and transitions to drier, more alpine terrain as you gain elevation. Near the top, a small meadow and pond make a good breather before the final push to Lake Angeles.

Lake Angeles is a classic glacial cirque lake—steep amphitheater walls, cold, clear water, and even a small island. In early season you might see cascades streaming off the cliffs. It’s a rewarding lunch spot, and strong hikers can continue higher toward Klahhane Ridge for bigger views (the extension is steeper and often holds snow longer). Overnight camping is allowed with a backcountry permit, and many beginners use this as an approachable first backpack.

Best time to hike: aim for June through October. Earlier in the season, snow can linger and obscure the route—navigation and traction may be needed. Even in summer, the shaded ascent helps on hot days, but the trail can be wet or muddy after rain. Arrive early on weekends; the small lot fills fast.

Keep an eye out for black-tailed deer and ruffed grouse in the forest. In spring, look for trillium and Indian-pipe lining the shady stretches. The lake is swimmable if you can handle very cold water—best access is from the southernmost campsite.

Bottom line: not many mid-hike views, but the destination delivers. If you want a similar workout with bigger panoramas throughout, consider linking this trail with Heather Park/Klahhane Ridge as a longer route—but as a day hike to a beautiful tarn, Lake Angeles is absolutely worth it.

Pros

  • Shaded climb keeps temperatures manageable on warm days
  • Gorgeous glacial cirque lake with a small island and cliffside cascades

Cons

  • Limited views until you reach the lake
  • Snow can linger into early season, complicating navigation

Parking

Park at the signed Heart O’ the Hills trailhead off Hurricane Ridge Road, just before the entrance station; turn right at the clearly marked turnoff. The lot fills early on weekends.

Caution

Steady, sustained climb with 2,300–2,400 ft gain; trail can be wet/muddy. Snow may obscure the route in spring/early summer—carry navigation and traction if needed. Pets are not allowed. For overnights, a backcountry permit is required; store food properly and consider carrying bear spray.
