Trail guide
Roystone Grange Trail is a 3.6-mile loop from Minninglow Car Park in the White Peak. It pairs the level gravel High Peak Trail with farm paths around Roystone Grange and a climb to Minninglow's tree-ringed burial ground. Allow about two to two and a half hours if you stop to explore.
An old railway bed makes for an easy, firm start and finish; the middle crosses limestone pasture on grass and uneven tracks, with four stiles and several gates. The ascent to Minninglow is short but steep, and fields can be muddy after rain. At the hilltop, mature beeches ring Neolithic chambered tombs and Bronze Age barrows. Roystone Grange adds a Victorian pump house and traces of Roman farming and a medieval monastic grange; view the historic remains from signed paths. Frame a tomb against the beech canopy for the route's distinctive photo.
Begin and end at Minninglow Car Park on Mouldridge Lane, beside the High Peak Trail. There are no toilets or refreshments along the route. Dogs are allowed, but keep them on a lead among livestock; follow signed paths and do not enter farm buildings or private archaeological areas.
