Trail guide
The Condor Gulch Trail to Condor Gulch Overlook is a 2-mile out-and-back from Bear Gulch Day Use Area, with about 600 feet of climbing. It rises about a mile to a rocky viewpoint, then returns on the same trail; allow about 1.5–2 hours. The overlook is the turnaround for this version. The named trail continues toward High Peaks and becomes strenuous beyond the viewpoint; a separate 5.3-mile loop makes a much longer day of it.
Start just north of Bear Gulch Day Use Area. Restrooms and drinking water are at the developed area, but there is no water on the trail. Parking can fill early on busy weekends and spring days. The climb has little shade, so avoid the hottest part of a summer day. Dogs are prohibited on park trails; service animals are allowed.
The trail gains height steadily through chaparral over rocky, uneven ground. It is exposed for much of the way, and the return follows the same rough footing downhill. At the overlook, the view opens back down Condor Gulch across sculpted volcanic cliffs and wooded slopes. Grooves in the rock may carry runoff after storms, though seasonal waterfalls are not guaranteed. For a photo, include the near rock and the gulch beyond it to show how the cliffs frame the ravine.
The Pinnacles formations include rhyolitic breccia, a rock made from volcanic ash, sand, and angular fragments. California condors are part of the landscape here: Pinnacles has been a release and management site in the recovery program since 2003, and the birds frequent the High Peaks. Look up as you walk, but treat a sighting as a bonus rather than a promise.
