Bear Gulch Cave

Bear Gulch Cave is a natural boulder cave on Pinnacles’ east side, partway up the Moses Spring route to Bear Gulch Reservoir. Huge rocks wedged into a narrow gorge leave a dark passage you can walk through. I’d make time for it if you’re comfortable with tight, uneven spaces: the full Moses Spring–Rim loop is a moderate 2.2 miles round trip with 500 feet of climbing.

Carry a flashlight or headlamp; parts of the cave are very dark. The upper passages can require stooping or squeezing between boulders, and the route is uneven. This is a poor fit if confined spaces make you uncomfortable, and the cave is not wheelchair accessible.

Lower and Upper Cave can operate independently. Bat pupping closures usually shut both sections around mid-May to mid-July, while the upper passage is typically available only in limited windows, often in March and October. Flooding or rockfall can close a section too, so check the current cave status before you go.

Approach from the park’s east entrance and Bear Gulch Day Use Area; the east and west sides of Pinnacles do not connect by road. The day-use area has 64 parking spaces, with a smaller lot closest to the Moses Spring trailhead. Lots can fill early on busy weekends and holidays. Pets aren’t allowed on park trails or in caves.

This is a talus cave, not a limestone cavern carved out of solid rock. Huge boulders fell into a narrow gorge and wedged together; those blocks form the ceilings above the passage. Look up and you can see how much of the cave is made from the rocks that tumbled in from above.

The Pinnacles rocks began as part of a volcanic field near present-day Lancaster about 23 million years ago. Movement along the San Andreas Fault carried this section north, and water and wind erosion shaped the volcanic rock into the cliffs and boulder-filled gorges around Bear Gulch.

Townsend’s big-eared bats use the cave, whose maternity colony is the largest between San Francisco and Mexico. Seasonal closures protect the bats while they roost and raise young; the cave’s access calendar follows their needs, not a fixed visitor season.
