More about Discovery Wall

A crag for climbersDiscovery Wall is a named climbing crag on Pinnacles' east side, near Bear Gulch Reservoir.

Discovery Wall is a named climbing crag on Pinnacles' east side, near Bear Gulch Reservoir. It's one of the park's popular east side climbing areas. Its draw is the routes on a real volcanic wall, so it belongs on the list if technical climbing is part of your visit.

Use the marked approachThe mapped point is on the cliff.

The mapped point is on the cliff. Start at Bear Gulch Day Use Area and follow the marked climber access routes; small posts carry a carabiner symbol. There is no water along the approach, so fill up in a developed area before you head out. Raptor protections can restrict climbing seasonally, often into June or July, and may change as nests are monitored. Check the current advisory before climbing.

Pinnacles climbing is mostly steep, protected by bolts face climbing on volcanic breccia, which is weaker than granite or basalt. Take an easier than usual first lead in the area, check holds and protection carefully, use redundant systems, and wear a helmet. Bolts aren't maintained by the park. New climbers should learn with a class or a guide permitted to work in the park.

The rock belongs to a volcanic field that erupted about 23 million years ago near present-day Lancaster. The Pacific Plate carried the Pinnacles north along the San Andreas Fault as the fault split the original volcanic field; erosion then sculpted the formations you see here. This broken, blocky rock is what makes the crag interesting to climb and calls for extra care.
