Trail guide
This 2 km out-and-back starts at Beachcomber Avenue and follows the Coast Track approach to The Balconies, then turns onto a short rocky spur to Fisherman’s Cave. Most of the walk is flat or gently rising; the little cave room is an unusual payoff for the distance. Allow about an hour. The last shelves have uneven steps and a narrow exposed edge, so skip the spur if you are unsteady on rock or uncomfortable near a drop.
Follow the broad fire trail for about 150 m, then take the signed left turn for The Balconies. A metal boardwalk leads to the lookout information board. From there the mapped cave path leaves the maintained Coast Track and crosses rock shelves to the room. Its formal access status is unclear; check current park guidance before attempting the spur. Toilets and the last water refill are at the Coast Track start. Park entry fees apply, and pets are not allowed in Royal National Park.
The end is a small room under a sandstone overhang, with two window openings and ocean and headland views; one window is partly overgrown. A curved cliff face frames the doorway. The cave’s date and original use are unconfirmed, so the name does not prove it was a fisherman’s hut. A pipe-like feature near the roof could be a chimney or a water catchment; its purpose is unknown. Leave the place as you found it.
