Wedding Cake Rock

Wedding Cake Rock is a bright-white sandstone lookout above the ocean on Royal National Park’s Coast Track, about an hour’s walk south of Bundeena. Its sharply layered edge stands out against the darker cliffs. It’s a memorable stop on the coastal walk, but expect to view the rock from behind a safety fence: the sandstone is soft, cracked and at very high risk of collapse.

Allow at least an hour each way from Bundeena. The Coast Track is rough, often steep and rocky, and it isn’t wheelchair accessible. Use toilet facilities before setting out and carry enough food and water for the return; phone reception is limited. During total fire bans the track closes, so check current alerts before you start. The track continues past the rock toward Marley Beach if you want a longer outing.

The approach crosses coastal heathland and follows cliffs with broad ocean views, so the rock isn’t the only reason to make the walk. Spring brings wildflowers, and the park notes swamp wallabies and birdlife along the track. The open-water outlook is also a whale-watching stretch. Some visitors find the fenced view of the rock less satisfying than the walk and coastline around it.

From the permitted side, frame the pale layers against the darker sea and cliffs. The railing can enter a close shot; a wider view keeps the rock in its coastal setting and makes clear where visitors are meant to stand. Don’t cross the barrier for a cleaner angle.
