Wedding Cake Rock

Overview

A photogenic slice of bright white sandstone teetering above the Tasman Sea, Wedding Cake Rock is the Instagram-famous stop on the Coast Track. It looks unreal for a reason: heavy iron leaching bleached the sandstone and left it soft and fracture‑prone. After a surge in visitors, a 2015 geotechnical assessment found it unstable, so it’s permanently fenced—view it from designated spots and skip the stunts.

Access & Safety

Expect a rough, often rocky walking track with limited phone reception and no facilities. Rangers have fenced the rock and issue on‑the‑spot fines for crossing—don’t be that person. Cliff edges anywhere along this coast are hazardous.

Getting There

Start from the northern Coast Track trailhead at the end of Beachcomber Avenue in Bundeena. It’s roughly a 1‑hour walk (about 5.1 km from the trail start) to the viewing area. There’s no carpark at the site—street parking only in Bundeena. A popular car‑free option is train to Cronulla, ferry to Bundeena, then walk to the trailhead.

What You’ll See

Big ocean vistas, sculpted sandstone, and coastal heathland the whole way. In migration season, keep an eye out for passing whales. The rock itself is best treated as a quick photo stop from behind the fence; many hikers continue south toward Marley Beach for broader scenery.

Logistics & Rules

• No toilets, drinking water, or bins—pack in/out everything.
• Pets and recreational drones aren’t permitted here.
• During total fire bans the track closes—check park alerts before you go.
• Royal National Park generally opens 7:30 am–8:30 pm; day‑use vehicle fees apply (e.g., $12 per vehicle).

Best Time to Visit

Go early on weekdays for cooler temps, softer crowds, and cleaner photos. Weekends and late mornings tend to be the busiest. If you’re here for photography, aim for morning light on the cliffs and bring plenty of water on hot days.
