Hiking Jibbon Head Engravings Walk

A short walk to the engravingsJibbon Head Engravings Walk is a 2.

Jibbon Head Engravings Walk is a 2.6 km return out-and-back from Loftus Street Reserve in Bundeena to the raised viewing platform at the engravings. It follows residential footpaths to Jibbon Beach, crosses the sand, then climbs over rocky steps through coastal scrub. The payoff is a close look at an important Dharawal cultural site and open views across Port Hacking. Allow about 1 to 1½ hours so you have time to look carefully.

Follow the beach to the headlandStart near the corner of Loftus and Neil streets and walk down to Jibbon Beach.

Start near the corner of Loftus and Neil streets and walk down to Jibbon Beach. Follow the sand to its far end, then turn onto the signed Jibbon Loop Track. The path steps over rock, passes a grassy clearing and a tunnel of thick vegetation, then crosses an exposed shelf with views toward Cronulla. It drops into a gully and climbs out at a fork; take the inland branch to the raised viewing platform. The 2.6 km figure is for this return walk, not the longer 5.1 km Jibbon Loop or the 6.8 km Bundeena circuit.

Take time at the engravingsThe broad sandstone shelf holds animal forms from land and sea, including a large whale.

The broad sandstone shelf holds animal forms from land and sea, including a large whale. The raised boardwalk protects the carvings, so stay on it and look from farther back: the whale is easier to take in at a distance, while some smaller marks are weathered and hard to pick out. Late-afternoon light or a visit after rain can help the shallow lines stand out.

What the walk asks of youThis is short but uneven.

This is short but uneven. Expect soft beach sand, rocky steps, scrubby track and a little up-and-down rather than a smooth promenade. Route descriptions put the total climbing around 35 to 45 m; the exposed rock shelf is unfenced. Keep well back from its edge. Dogs and other pets are not allowed in the national park, except trained assistance animals working at the time.

Access and facilitiesThe walk starts at Loftus Street Reserve near the Loftus and Neil streets corner.
