Hiking Karloo Pools Walk

Is this the Karloo walk you want?Karloo Pools Walk is a 5.

Karloo Pools Walk is a 5.4 km out-and-back from Heathcote Train Station to Karloo Pool on Kangaroo Creek, following the signed Karloo Track and returning the same way. Allow about 2.5 hours, longer if you plan to swim or picnic. The payoff is a deep freshwater pool below sandstone shelves and trees; the price of getting there is a rocky descent and a steep climb back out of the creek valley. This version turns around at the pool. Continuing to Uloola Falls is the longer Karloo walking track, about 10 km return from the station.

Begin at Heathcote Train Station, where parking and toilets are available. Head southeast along Wilson Parade, past the emergency-services centre, to the signed track entrance. That entrance is about 550 m from the station, and the walk to it is included in the 5.4 km total. There is no confirmed water refill point on the route, so start with what you need for the return and time at the pool. Dogs are not allowed in the park, except certified assistance animals.

The bush path drops gradually at first, then gets steeper over uneven rock and tree roots. Around the first kilometre it eases onto tilted sandstone, where the valley opens through the low scrub and trees. The track then returns to bush before descending more sharply toward the creek. The direct pool route does not require scrambling, but its rocky steps make footing part of the effort, especially on the way down.

Near the bottom, the path levels and reaches Kangaroo Creek. A short crossing leads to Karloo Pool; water depth changes, and the sandstone beside the water can be slippery. The pool is a broad, deep waterhole below wooded sandstone cliffs. One local estimate puts it at roughly 20 m by 10 m and up to 3 m deep, so treat it as a swimming hole rather than a shallow wading spot. Swimming is optional; the pool and its rock shelves make a good pause even if you stay dry.

Keep some strength for the returnYou retrace the same route, climbing out from the creek basin over the rock and roots you came…

You retrace the same route, climbing out from the creek basin over the rock and roots you came down. Elevation samples fall from about 195 m near the station to about 64 m at the pool, with smaller rises along the way; the full return works out to roughly 200 m of total ascent. Visitors most often find this uphill section the tiring part. After rain, the track can become boggy, and the clay and rock feel slick, so allow extra care and time when it is wet.

From the established sandstone edge, include a strip of water in front of the tree-lined rock shelves. The reflection gives the pool its scale and brings the cliffs into the frame; wind or ripples can change how clearly it shows.
