More about Corbin Cabin

A cabin that takes time to reachCorbin Cabin is a four-room chestnut-log home beside the Hughes River in Nicholson Hollow.

Corbin Cabin is a four-room chestnut-log home beside the Hughes River in Nicholson Hollow. It is one of the few intact log houses left in Shenandoah, now kept as a primitive overnight rental. The usual approach is a full-day hike, so make it your destination if you want river-valley walking and local history together. Day hikers can see the cabin from the trail, but it is a rented home, not an open house; do not expect an interior tour unless you have booked it.

Pick your approachThe longer route starts at the Old Rag parking area on the park boundary.

The longer route starts at the Old Rag parking area on the park boundary. Look across the road for the Nicholson Hollow Trail marker, then follow the trail to the cabin and return the same way. NPS lists about 8 miles round trip, seven hours and 1,240 feet of climbing, with several stream crossings. Another route account measures 8.4 miles, so allow a full day and expect a little variation in the distance. Most of the climb comes in the last stretch.

A shorter option uses the Corbin Cabin Cutoff from Skyline Drive: about 1.5 miles each way, but steep. If Skyline Drive is closed, PATC lists that hike-in as four miles. Check the road before counting on the short approach. The Old Rag route requires the park entrance fee. Pets are allowed on the NPS route on a leash no longer than six feet, and PATC lists the cabin as pet-friendly.

Nicholson Hollow was settled by the late 1700s, and the Corbin family had lived there since at least the 1880s. George T. Corbin built this cabin himself at the center of a small farm. Pens, henhouses and stone fences once stood nearby; most of those farm structures have since fallen into ruin. The family was displaced in 1938 as the park was created, leaving the cabin as one of the last pieces of the community.

The original room had a loft; a rear lean-to became the kitchen, and a side addition was still being built when the family left. The cabin’s construction date is given as around 1910 by one record and circa 1921 by another, so the early 20th century is the safe way to date it. PATC took over the cabin in 1954, repaired the roof and turned the unfinished lean-to into sleeping space. It was restored again in 2017 and remains available as a public rental for up to 12. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

A primitive stay beside the riverExpect a simple cabin rather than a staffed attraction: it has no electricity or bathroom.

Expect a simple cabin rather than a staffed attraction: it has no electricity or bathroom. PATC describes bears and snakes in the area and warns that seasonal snakes may be around or even inside the cabin; if that would make an overnight uncomfortable, choose another rental. For a photo, include the porch, full log front and stone chimney together so the cabin’s shape reads clearly, and leave the rented space to its guests.
