Trail guide
This 2.8-mile out-and-back follows Corbin Cabin Cutoff from Skyline Drive to Corbin Cabin, then returns the same way. Allow about 2 to 2.5 hours. The route drops roughly 950 feet on the way in, so the climb back is the hard part. Choose it for the cabin and the old hollow community, not for a ridge-top view. The separate 4.2-mile Nicholson Hollow loop uses other trails; it is a different hike.
From the small parking area, the trail starts by a concrete post and descends steeply through mountain laurel and hardwood forest. A stream comes alongside the route around the half-mile mark. Near 0.9 mile, look for a stone wall and the remains of a Nicholson homestead. The path stays wooded, with no broad overlook to break up the descent.
At about 1.4 miles, the cutoff reaches the Hughes River. Corbin Cabin is across the water, with the river and surrounding homestead landscape as the payoff. Getting close to the cabin means rock-hopping across the river; when water is high, the crossing can be difficult, so don't force it. Turn around here and climb back on the same steep trail.
George T. Corbin built the chestnut-log cabin in 1910. It is an unusually intact reminder of the families who lived in these hollows before Shenandoah National Park was created. The Potomac Appalachian Trail Club restored it in 1954 and again in 2017. It is a primitive rental cabin, not an open day-use shelter, so don't assume you can go inside or use its privy.
The trailhead is the Corbin Cabin Cutoff parking area on Skyline Drive near milepost 37.9, on the west side of the road. The lot is small, and a park entrance fee applies. No public drinking water or toilet was confirmed at the trailhead. Dogs are allowed on this trail; Shenandoah requires a physical leash no longer than six feet.
