More about Piney River CCC Building

A small CCC-era officeThis is the surviving technical building from Shenandoah’s Piney River Civilian Conservation…

This is the surviving technical building from Shenandoah’s Piney River Civilian Conservation Corps camp, just off Skyline Drive at milepost 22.1. It’s a modest stop for visitors curious about how the park took shape. The building is listed as open to the public, but it sits within a working maintenance and trail-crew area; visitor parking and the approach aren’t clearly documented. Piney River can also be reached on foot by the Appalachian Trail and Piney Branch Trail, though access to this building itself is less clear.

The building served as the camp’s technical office and housed landscape architects working on park infrastructure. A sign across the road identifies the camp as NP-12, Company 1393, nicknamed “Redbird Camp.” This is the useful detail to keep in mind: the stop connects the CCC story to the planning and construction of Shenandoah, not just to a former work camp.

A camp shaped by the mountainsPiney River was among the last CCC camps built in Shenandoah.

Piney River was among the last CCC camps built in Shenandoah. Its layout followed the mountain terrain instead of the more typical U-shaped camp plan. The technical office and the Naturalist’s Office survive in their original locations; most other camp buildings gave way to maintenance structures and paved storage areas. The landscape records the CCC’s role in developing Shenandoah and Skyline Drive, and became part of the Skyline Drive Historic District when its National Register boundary was expanded in 1997.
