Hogback Overlook

Hogback Overlook is a roadside viewpoint on Skyline Drive at mile 20.8, 3,385 feet above sea level. It extends along the road for 0.2 miles, making it Shenandoah’s longest overlook. The pull-off is beside the drive and the view is only a few steps away, so this is a quick scenic stop rather than a hike. Stop for a broad look north across the Blue Ridge and the Shenandoah Valley.

Gimlet Ridge rises straight ahead, then bends left as it descends toward the valley; Mathews Arm lies to the right. On a clear day, the Allegheny Mountains appear far beyond them. A wayside exhibit helps identify the horizon. The nearest forested ridge fills the foreground, with farms and open patches visible in the valley between successive blue ridges.

The crest here exposes Pedlar Formation granodiorite, older rock revealed after erosion wore away the overlying Catoctin Formation. Along the road, the light-gray crystalline rock has purple and dark-red iron-oxide stains where ancient fractures healed. Those marks hint at the long geologic history hidden in an otherwise quick roadside stop.

For a phone photo, keep a nearer ridge along the lower edge and frame north across the valley; that foreground makes the distant bands easier to read. Late-day light can define the ridges and color the clouds, while the far Alleghenies depend on clear visibility. You can take in the view without leaving the roadside overlook.
