Hogback Overlook

Overview

Hogback Overlook sits along Skyline Drive around milepost 20.7–21, beside Hogback Mountain—the highest peak in the park’s North District. It’s a long roadside stop with sweeping, high-vantage views and plenty of room to spread out without any hiking required.

Why it’s worth a stop

Photographers love this one because it’s unusually versatile: depending on the season, you can shoot both sunrise and sunset from here. The elevation and breadth of the overlook give you multiple angles, so you’re not locked into a single viewpoint.

What you’ll see

Expect wide, layered vistas: west across the Shenandoah Valley and Massanutten Mountain, and documented eastward views toward the Piedmont on clear days. In autumn, the foliage show stretches for miles; in winter, the ridge lines really pop.

Trail connections

The Appalachian Trail runs through this stretch, linking Little Hogback Overlook with Hogback Overlook. If the pullout feels busy, duck onto the AT for a short, quieter stroll to slightly different perspectives.

Wildlife

Visitors commonly report sightings of white‑tailed deer, birds of prey riding thermals, and the usual small mammals. Keep your distance and enjoy with binoculars if you have them.

Practical notes

There are no services at the overlook—bring water and snacks. Nearby amenities are at Matthews Arm Campground and Elkwallow Wayside.

Best time to visit

• Weekdays at dawn or the last hour of light for fewer people and the best glow.
• Fall color season is spectacular but busy—arrive early or late.
• Clear, crisp days offer the longest views; summer haze can soften the scene.
