Guide
The Point Overlook is a roadside viewpoint on Skyline Drive at milepost 55.5, 3,235 feet above sea level. The park entrance fee applies. A short, slightly steep path leads out to a rocky viewpoint, which gives the overlook its name. Make the stop if you want a quick look across the Blue Ridge and don't mind a climb back up.
The view faces west-northwest. Powell Mountain sits straight ahead, with Grindstone Mountain farther back to the left and Green Mountain to its left. On a clear day, the view reaches across the Shenandoah Valley, and Elkton may appear to the left of Green Mountain when the air is clear.
The rocky viewpoint gives you a closer look and a good place to linger. The walk is short, but the return is the steeper part; wear shoes with grip if you plan to go down to the rocks.
Use the rocks as a foreground and let the mountain layers run behind them; that shows more depth than pointing straight across the valley. The west-northwest view can catch evening light, but fog or haze may hide the distant ridges and Elkton.
