Cherry Republic is a multi-building cherry-food and shopping campus in Glen Arbor, with the Great Hall shop, a winery, Cherry Public House, gardens and an ice cream stand. It’s an easy add-on after a dune hike if you want to browse, taste local cherry products or sit down for a meal. You can make it a quick sample stop or stretch it into lunch and a tasting.

The Great Hall carries more than 200 cherry products, and sampling is part of the draw. The winery pours cherry wines and hard cider. Cherry Public House has a seasonally changing lunch and dinner menu, a dozen taps for beer and cider, and homemade cherry pie and ice cream. In summer, Red Box Creamery adds cherry ice cream, vegan cherry soft serve, milkshakes and cherry-pie flurries.

Crooked flagstone paths wind through perennial gardens and link the Great Hall, winery and Public House; birch logs along the path serve as seats. There are indoor and patio tables, children’s play areas and a pit-spitting arena, so the campus has more to do than shop. The gardens and wooded courtyard make it an especially pleasant place to pause when the outdoor seating is in use.

Founder Bob Sutherland started Cherry Republic in 1989, selling a T-shirt from his car with the line “Life, Liberty, Beaches and Pie.” By 1995 he had a small Glen Arbor storefront making and shipping eight cherry products. The Great Hall’s 200-plus-item range grew out of that tiny local start.

Give lunch some slackThis is a private town business, not a National Lakeshore visitor facility.

This is a private town business, not a National Lakeshore visitor facility. Visitors report street and lot parking, though some say it can be limited in busy months. The shop can feel cramped at peak times, and restaurant wait times and service are mixed; leave extra time if you’re planning to eat rather than only browse.
