The Francisco Morazan Shipwreck Overlook is a bluff on South Manitou Island’s south shore, where a partly submerged freighter sits offshore in Lake Michigan. It’s a striking stop if you’re already exploring the island, but the payoff is the view from land; the ship itself isn’t a place to visit. From the bluff, a wide frame that includes both the main hull and the detached section makes clear how far the wreck lies offshore.

Plan the island walkReach the bluff on foot from the village.

Reach the bluff on foot from the village. The approach is a multi-mile island walk, so leave time for the return to the dock and check current island access before you plan. There are routes through the village past the Weather Station Campground and via Burdick and Ohio roads; both connect with the trail to the wreck and the old-growth cedars. The island is normally reached by passenger ferry from Leland, so build the walk around the boat’s departure and return times.

Launched in Hamburg in 1922 as the Arcadia, the ship changed hands eleven times, sailed under six flags and carried eight names during its 38-year career. It was registered in Liberia as the Francisco Morazan in 1959. The name on the wreck is only the last chapter of a surprisingly international working life.

The storm that ended its voyageThe Morazan left Chicago for Europe in late November 1960.

The Morazan left Chicago for Europe in late November 1960. A failed boiler-feed pump left it drifting on Lake Michigan for hours; fog, strong northwest winds and a blinding snowstorm followed. The ship ran aground on South Manitou Island, and the crew was removed after salvage proved impossible.

The Morazan grounded over the remains of the Walter Frost, a steamer lost at the same spot in 1903, and damaged the older wreck further. Islanders later recovered pieces of the cargo, including canned chicken and toys. Double-crested cormorants and gulls now use the exposed hull, adding bird calls to the view from the bluff.
