Port Oneida School is a one-room schoolhouse in the Port Oneida rural historic community, just north of M-22 and across Port Oneida Road from Kelderhouse Farm. It’s a good short stop if you like seeing the everyday buildings behind a farming community’s history. The site is open to visitors, but regular hours for going inside aren’t established; count on the exterior unless you’ve confirmed the classroom is open.

The white clapboard school has a steep gable roof, open bell tower and shallow porch. The concrete approach is uneven, with steps at the porch and doorway, so this isn’t a step-free visit. In the yard, look for the hand pump and the small privy with its crescent-moon cutout. The pump’s current operation and water safety aren’t established.

Schooling here began in the 1860s, though the surviving building dates to around 1890. After the dockside store closed around 1900, the school became a gathering place for the community. When it consolidated with Glen Arbor School in the early 1940s, the building continued as a meeting place for Port Oneida residents.

Students planted the row of sugar maples along the south side for Arbor Day; the Kelderhouse family later tapped them for syrup. In the classroom, boys and girls sat on opposite sides and had separate coat rooms, but they played together at recess. During winter blizzards, children rode to school on horse-drawn sleds tucked under blankets. From the yard, a wide view that keeps the bell tower and maple row in frame shows both the building and its setting.
