Trail guide
Uluhe Loop is a 0.33-mile loop on an unpaved path in the Maunalei Arboretum–Mahana Ridge system. From its junction with Mahana Ridge, the route follows a short spur to a compact circuit, then retraces the spur. Allow about 20 minutes for this local loop; the distance and time do not include the long approach from parking. I’d add it only if you’re already taking on the ridge route.
The resort lists D.T. Fleming Beach Park and Kapalua Village Center as access points for Mahana Ridge and describes the hike to the ridge trailhead as strenuous and over 20 miles round trip. Uluhe starts on the ridge, not beside a road. An older trail guide says the arboretum sits above a private gated neighborhood and is reached only on foot via Mahana Ridge, with no cars allowed. Current directions don’t name Uluhe or confirm its status, so verify access before committing to the long approach.
The Maunalei Arboretum includes native Hawaiian plants and species brought from around the world. A resort trail guide credits D. T. Fleming, Honolua Ranch’s plantation manager, with building the collection from plants he gathered on his travels. The larger Mahana Ridge route is known for views of Mokupe‘a and Honokahua Gulches; no Uluhe-specific viewpoint is confirmed, so treat those as part of the ridge hike, not a guaranteed payoff from this small loop.
The mapped Uluhe path is unpaved, but reliable descriptions of its grade, steps, crossings, shade, and wayfinding weren’t found. The older arboretum guide marks the trails no-dogs; leave pets out and check current rules at the access point.
