Ōkārito Trig Walk

From the car park, follow the shared walking track through bush and over a curved boardwalk across the estuary. The route then follows Three Mile Pack Track. After about 10 to 15 minutes, turn left onto the Ōkārito Trig Walk; continuing on the pack track leads toward a different, longer coastal walk. The 4.2 km figure includes the shared approach, the trig spur and the return on the same track, rather than a one-way distance.

The trig branch winds steadily uphill through native forest on a well-graded track. Hikers often find the upper part steeper than the easy-to-intermediate label might suggest, and the lower climb gives up few big views; expect most of the panorama at the end. Take the ascent at a pace that leaves you comfortable for the descent. If you'd rather stay on easier ground, the Wetland Walk is a shorter way to enjoy the estuary boardwalk without taking the climb to the trig.

The viewpoint sits at about 158 m and opens across forest to Ōkārito Lagoon, the beaches and coast, with the Southern Alps/Kā Tiritiri o te Moana beyond. It is a wide landscape rather than a single peak, and cloud can hide the mountain backdrop. For a photo, include the forest canopy below the viewpoint with the lagoon and coast behind it; that foreground gives the scale of the wetland and shoreline.

The curved boardwalk crosses estuary wetland before the climb enters forest. The wider Ōkārito Lagoon is an important wetland with 76 recorded native bird species, so bird calls and activity are part of the setting, though any particular species is never guaranteed on this walk. The wetland, bush and open summit view make the route feel more varied than its short distance suggests.

From Franz Josef, drive about 15 km north on SH 6 to the signed Ōkārito turnoff, then follow the sealed road about 13 km to the village. Park beside Ōkārito School House on The Strand; the car park also serves the Wetland Walk and Three Mile Pack Track. Dogs are not allowed on the route.
