Before you go

Get the logistics right

If you're approaching via Roaring Meg, the hike-in camp has toilets and creek water; the water is untreated and needs treatment before drinking. Overnight walks require a booking. There's no mobile reception at South Point, and the coast can have slippery rocks and strong currents, so stay well back from rough water. Dogs aren't allowed. In peak summer and on weekends between the Melbourne Cup holiday and Easter, buses run from Tidal River to Telegraph Saddle and the saddle car park closes to other vehicles.

South Point is the remote southern tip of Wilsons Promontory and the southernmost point of mainland Australia. It's a coastal walking destination, not a roadside lookout: the approach runs through forest and hillside before opening onto a rugged shore of granite boulders and surf. I'd save it for a trip built around the walk and the landmark itself, rather than squeezing it into a day of quick stops. Wilsons Promontory Lightstation is on South East Point, a separate destination.

The last leg still takes workFrom Roaring Meg Hike-In Camping Area, the South Point Track is 7.

From Roaring Meg Hike-In Camping Area, the South Point Track is 7.4 km return and about two hours, rated Grade 4. Those figures cover only the final leg. From Telegraph Saddle, the hike to South Point is 19.4 km one way and about six hours. Plan around the full route, not the shorter figure, and decide in advance whether your outing needs an overnight stop. The approach starts inland, then opens onto the Tasman Sea and the boulder-strewn coastline. For a photo, frame one of the granite boulders against open water from safe ground; it gives the rocky edge more scale than a straight shot across the sea.
