Getting there

From Field, take Yoho Valley Road about 5 km east of town and continue toward Takakkaw Falls. Parks Canada gives the road a normal open season from mid-June to mid-October, weather permitting; it closes for avalanche risk the rest of the year. Check current conditions before setting out. The route has tight switchbacks: vehicles over 7 m (23 ft) must reverse through the turns, and trailers are not permitted.

A quick stop on the road to Takakkaw FallsMeeting of the Waters is a small roadside stop on Yoho Valley Road, where the Yoho River joins…

Meeting of the Waters is a small roadside stop on Yoho Valley Road, where the Yoho River joins the Kicking Horse River. The appeal is the line where the two currents meet, but trees can screen it from the pull-off. Stop if you are already driving the valley; the view is not guaranteed. Parking is limited at this small pull-off. A short, steep, gravelly path descends toward the water for a closer look, but its footing is uneven and its maintained status is unclear. Skip the descent if it does not feel secure.

A colour line that changesThe Yoho River carries fine glacial rock flour that can make its water look cloudy or milky…

The Yoho River carries fine glacial rock flour that can make its water look cloudy or milky blue-green, while the Kicking Horse often looks clearer. Their contrast shifts with runoff and weather. From the pull-off, look for the seam between the currents; trees may hide it, and the colours may not be vivid on every visit.

The Kicking Horse nameThe river's name recalls an 1858 expedition mishap.

The river's name recalls an 1858 expedition mishap. Geologist James Hector was stunned by a near-fatal kick to the chest from a horse while exploring here, and the river and nearby pass took the horse's name.
