Malham Tarn from Watersinks“You're approaching Watersinks, the start of the walk to Malham Tarn. This broad upland lake is unusual in limestone country, where water normally drains away; glacial clay and gravel help hold it here.”

Trail guide
The manager classifies this route as challenging, even though it is reasonably flat. The surface is mostly grassy paths, gravel or unmade estate tracks, plus a short road walk. There is no major sustained climb: sampled elevations along the loop range from 373 m to 420 m, with the tarn itself sitting at roughly 377 m. Expect rough grass and muddy ground after wet weather, and there is one stile on the field return, so it is not a barrier-free circuit.
The payoff is open water. Wide views across Malham Tarn are framed by wooded shoreline and estate parkland, then give way to limestone and moorland fields with a quiet upland feel. The tarn sits in a limestone and marl landscape, and the 18th-century lead-smelt-mill chimney is a striking reminder of past industry on the moor. From the bird hide, watch for waterbirds including great crested grebe, tufted duck and teal.
Dogs are welcome under close control and on a lead, but they are not allowed on the National Nature Reserve boardwalk. This is working upland farmland and estate ground, so livestock and seasonal restrictions in woodland and farmland, or protection for ground-nesting birds, can apply at times and should be respected wherever signed. No special permit is needed for the ordinary public route.
There are no toilets or refreshments at the start; the nearest are in Malham village, about 3 miles away. For a shorter, more accessible visit to the tarn, the official 2.5 km miles-without-stiles path from the same car park is the better choice, and it includes a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk loop at the Water Houses end, where dogs are not permitted.
