Yorkshire Dales National Park, EN
Waterfall, limestone gorge and a towering cove on one 4.5-mile loop
Overview
A circular low-level walk in Malhamdale, starting and finishing at the Malham National Park Visitor Centre. The complete loop is 4.5 miles / 7.2 km and takes around 3 hours at a steady pace with stops.
The route runs Visitor Centre, Janet's Foss, Gordale Scar, Malham Cove, then back to the Visitor Centre. Three very different set pieces arrive in quick succession: a small waterfall tucked into woodland, a deep limestone gorge, and the curved cliff of the Cove with its limestone pavement above. Between them you cross fields, farm tracks and short road sections, so the walking links the landmarks rather than filling time.

Malham Village and National Park Centre“You're coming up on Malham village, where the beck runs between stone houses and little bridges. It's the base for the limestone walks, but I'd spend a few minutes in the village itself before setting off.”

Trail guide
Rated 5 out of 10, moderate. There is no scrambling, but expect uneven field and woodland paths, stone paths and flights of stone steps, and ground that stays damp or slippery near the becks. Samples along the route sit between roughly 192 and 327 metres, beginning and ending near 195 metres, so the climbing comes in short pulls rather than one long ascent. Boots with grip help more than fitness does here.
Water near the falls and gorge can be cold and deep. Around Malham Cove the limestone edges are steep and exposed, and the pavement above has open grikes and uneven blocks. Keep to rights of way and stay back from cave mouths and cliff edges, especially with children in the group.
Malham Cove is a high limestone amphitheatre with a pavement on its lip; Gordale Scar is a limestone gorge cut by meltwater; Janet's Foss is a wooded waterfall. Look for the blocky pattern of the pavement, woodland plants along the beck, birds moving through the trees and crags, and grazing livestock in the fields.
Start from the named visitor centre and car park on Chapel Gate. The centre has toilets and accessible parking. Dogs are welcome but must be kept under control and on a lead around livestock, and on a short lead from March through July to protect ground-nesting birds. Keep pets on the paths near caves, limestone pavement and sinkholes.
These are well loved landmarks, and visitor accounts consistently describe the stretch around Janet's Foss and Gordale Scar as the busiest part, with quieter walking once you move on. Come expecting company at the highlights. If you want a longer route with a more remote feel and archaeological interest instead, the separate Malham Tarn Archaeology Walk is the upland alternative.
