The Ansel Adams Gallery is an art gallery and shop between the Yosemite Valley Visitor Center and Post Office. Its collection includes original Ansel Adams photographs, alongside work by more than 20 other artists, framed reproductions, books, art supplies, handcrafts and changing exhibitions. Plan on browsing art and merchandise rather than a museum devoted to Adams’s life; that expectation matters if you are coming for biography.
The gallery offers photography instruction, including Valley walks, classes, private guiding and multi-day workshops. Visitors repeatedly praise instructors’ practical composition and camera advice, including guidance useful to phone photographers. Harry Best’s Yosemite studio began in a tent in 1902; the family built a studio in Old Yosemite Village in 1904. Ansel Adams became close to the Best family and married Virginia Best in the studio on January 2, 1928. The gallery’s roots are a family story as much as a tribute to a visiting photographer.
Virginia Best Adams ran the studio until 1971, when she and Ansel passed it to their son Michael and daughter-in-law Jeanne. Around that handoff, the business took the Ansel Adams Gallery name to reflect its focus on photography and Adams’s conservation legacy. Its photography workshop program began in 1940; early week-long sessions combined field, classroom and darkroom work.
