Parking

Use the Yosemite Falls day-use parking area across the road, just beyond Camp 4’s entrance. Camp 4 parking is for campers. Shuttle stop 7 serves the trailhead area.

Best time to go

The maintained trail runs beside steep drops in places. Stay on the path and don’t cut switchbacks. Summer is hot and dry, and loose granite can be slippery. The upper route gets little winter sun and can be icy or buried by snow. This is a year-round route, but conditions change with the season; Yosemite Falls is strongest in spring, and the waterfall view is farther up the trail.

Safety

The climb gains about 1,000 feet in a mile, with steep drops beside parts of the maintained trail. Loose decomposed granite and rocky footing can be slippery; summer is hot and exposed, and the upper route can be icy or snow-buried in winter. Stay on the trail and do not cut switchbacks. Pets, bicycles and strollers are prohibited.

Hiking Columbia Rock Trail

Is this the climb you want?Columbia Rock is a 2-mile out-and-back from the Yosemite Falls Trailhead near Camp 4, climbing…

Columbia Rock is a 2-mile out-and-back from the Yosemite Falls Trailhead near Camp 4, climbing to a railed overlook above Yosemite Valley at the turnaround. The climb gains about 1,000 feet in a mile, then you retrace the same switchbacks. Allow 2 to 3 hours. I’d choose it for a short outing with a real uphill push and a broad view of Half Dome and Sentinel Rock; this is steep work, not an easy Valley stroll.

The climbFrom the Camp 4 area, a short path follows the Valley Loop Trail to the start of the ascent.

From the Camp 4 area, a short path follows the Valley Loop Trail to the start of the ascent. Then the trail climbs through oak woodland in dozens of switchbacks. Higher up, trees thin and exposed rocky plateaus open views across Yosemite Valley. Loose, sandy decomposed granite and rock can slide underfoot, so take care on the descent and stay on the marked tread.

At about one mile, you reach the named turnaround and its railed viewpoint across the valley toward Half Dome and Sentinel Rock. For a photo with depth, keep some of the forested valley floor in the foreground and Half Dome beyond it. Columbia Rock is an overlook, not the top of Yosemite Falls. The longer trail continues above it; a waterfall viewpoint is about another half mile beyond, outside this 2-mile outing.

The Yosemite Falls Trail was built from 1873 to 1877 and is one of Yosemite’s oldest historic trails. It continues toward the top of the waterfall, but Columbia Rock makes a worthwhile early turnaround if you want the climb and valley view without taking on the much longer full route.
