Guide
Kolob Canyons Visitor Center is Zion's northern-district orientation stop at I-15 Exit 40, about 45 miles north of Springdale. Everyone entering Kolob has to stop here to show an Interagency pass or pay Zion's entrance fee. The five-mile scenic road beyond it is explored by car; there is no shuttle in this district. Wilderness permits aren't issued here; get them at Zion Canyon Visitor Center in Springdale.
Rangers answer questions, and exhibits cover local geology, vegetation and wildlife. Ask about the trails before setting out. The center has accessible parking and walkways, an accessible flush restroom, and potable water with a bottle-filling station, making it a useful last service stop before a drive or hike. There are also books and gifts and a picnic table.
Kolob Canyons Road runs five miles from the visitor center to viewpoints and trail access among the district's narrow, parallel crimson box canyons. Their roughly 2,000-foot cliff walls are cut into the western edge of the Colorado Plateau. Snow or ice can close the road in winter, so check current conditions before making the drive.
