Cleopatra's Pool Track

Cleopatra’s Pool Track is a short out-and-back branch from the all-tide Abel Tasman Coast Track near Torrent Bay. The named spur is about 0.55 miles round trip: follow the mapped 0.27-mile path to the pool approach, then retrace it. Allow roughly 20–30 minutes for the spur, with extra time if you want to linger by the water. This distance does not include the longer Coast Track approach from Anchorage, which is described as about a two-hour return outing to the pool.

From Anchorage, the Coast Track goes west along the beach, climbs to a forested saddle and continues around Torrent Bay on the all-tide route. The signed pool spur turns left just after the bridge over Torrent River. The low-tide route across the estuary is a separate Coast Track option; stay on the all-tide track if Cleopatra’s Pool is your destination. Torrent Bay estuary crossings are normally limited to two hours either side of low tide.

The named path leads through native forest toward the river pools. A small stream crossing and rock-hopping near the water are reported, but the exact crossing and current depth are not established. The stored track line ends about 28 metres from the pool location; the final boulder steps are not mapped precisely. Expect uneven rock and take care where it is wet. The short distance makes this an easy add-on once you are already on the Coast Track, but it is not a road-side stop.

At the end is a series of natural rock pools at the base of Torrent River, with a moss-lined chute that forms the well-known natural waterslide. Large rocks surround the water, so you can sit and look around without swimming. The water is often described as cold, and some visitors find the attraction more modest than they expected; think of it as a distinctive river stop rather than a large waterfall or full canyon walk. Further upstream, the waterfalls, rapids and rock scenery are reached only on guided canyoning trips.

There is no vehicle access to the spur. DOC road-end parking is at Mārahau and Tōtaranui; water taxis serve Anchorage, followed by a longer Coast Track approach. Plan that access leg separately from the 0.55-mile side track. Water taxis must be booked in advance and use specific pick-up points, so confirm the stop for your trip. If you walk from Anchorage, count the Coast Track approach in your day’s route. No facilities at the pool were identified, and dogs are not allowed on the track.
