Boulder Beach

Boulder Beach is an unofficially named cove on Acadia’s Ocean Path, between Monument Cove and Otter Cliff. This is a rock shore, not a sandy beach: rounded, roughly bowling-ball-sized cobbles and pink granite make the short detour distinctive. Stop to look closely at the stones and the coast; skip the descent if you need smooth, level footing.

Ocean Path follows the coast beside Park Loop Road. Sand Beach is an NPS-listed starting point for the trail, but the lot and coastal corridor can fill early on summer days and weekends. The main path is mostly level; the short way down to the cobbles is uneven and can be slippery, so wear shoes with grip or admire the cove from the path.

Acadia’s cobbles began as rocks carried across the region by glaciers, often as much larger erratics. Waves and collisions rounded them over time, and storms keep moving them. The National Park Service notes that cobble beaches are losing stones, so leave every rock where it is.

Rounded boulders make a textured foreground against the Atlantic and the wooded headland. Sunrise can warm the granite and cliffs, which is why photographers seek this shore early; cloud cover changes the effect. Reaching a low shoreline angle means negotiating the uneven access, so take care on the wet stones.
