“Up ahead is Otter Cliff, a pink-granite wall above the Atlantic. A Navy radio station once stood here, receiving transatlantic messages during the First World War, including news of the armistice in nineteen eighteen.”

This small rocky cove on Acadia's Ocean Path is known for a blocky, roughly 20-foot pink-granite sea stack. It's a worthwhile geology pause along this coast. Cross Park Loop Road and follow Ocean Path to the rock wall; look down from the path to see the stack and boulder-lined shore. Treat it as a view from above, not a beach stop: no safe descent to the shore has been verified.

Parking around the Sand Beach–Otter Point stretch is limited. On summer days and weekends, the Sand Beach lot and the roadside lane toward Otter Point can fill by about 9 a.m., so start this part of the coast early if you need parking there.

The stack's pink granite is a blocky tower separated from the neighboring cliffs by wave erosion. The cove's shore is cobble and boulder rather than soft sand. From the path, keep the stack and the gap between it and the cliff in frame; that contrast makes its shape clear without relying on a close shore view.

The last glacier over Mount Desert Island was estimated to be about a mile thick and pushed the island down. After the ice melted, the land rose. Nearby Cadillac Cliffs preserves an older shoreline: waves carved its cave more than 12,000 years ago, when it was at sea level; it now sits about 65 feet above today's sea. Comparing that high cave with the stack below puts Acadia's post-glacial land rebound into view.
