Wildwood Stables

Wildwood Stables is Acadia’s horse-drawn carriage-tour base, just off Park Loop Road near Jordan Pond. It also rents stalls and offers equestrian camping for visitors bringing their own horses. I’d choose the two-hour Rockefeller’s Bridges ride if you want the strongest mix of scenery and history: it passes three stone bridges and the Jordan Pond Gatehouse. The shorter Day Mountain ride gives you a quieter hour among the trees.

Both tours move at a leisurely pace and include narration about the park and its carriage-road history. The one-hour Day Mountain loop winds through hardwood and softwood forest, with ocean views breaking through only in places. Expect more woods than coastline. If open sea views are the main reason you’re coming, this ride may feel repetitive. The two-hour Rockefeller’s Bridges route is the better choice if you want to see the stonework and hear how the roads were built.

Tours run on scheduled departures and are seasonal, so reserve a time and leave room to find the stable lane. The Island Explorer’s seasonal Loop Road bus stops at Wildwood; check the current map and schedule before relying on it. Parking and flush restrooms are on site. A ramp leads to the office, there’s a larger restroom stall, and wheelchair-accessible carriages can be reserved through the operator. During spring mud season, carriage roads close until the gravel firms up; check park road status if your plans are near the thaw.

Wildwood began as a farm. Ernest and Helen Dane bought the property in 1911, and Helen later donated it to the park. In 1958, the park removed the farm’s other buildings and kept the barn. The stable site still carries that working-farm history alongside today’s carriage tours. The name goes further back: “Wildwood” was associated with earlier owner W. E. Hadlock, who bought the farm from the Jordan brothers and served as a lieutenant colonel in the 28th Maine Infantry during the Civil War.

John D. Rockefeller Jr. and his family built Acadia’s 45-mile carriage-road network from 1913 to 1940 for horse-and-carriage travel without motor traffic. The roads follow the shape of the land, with stone drainage work and retaining walls built into the route. Sixteen of the network’s 17 stone-faced bridges were financed by Rockefeller. On the rides from Wildwood, the horses move through that work at a pace slow enough to notice it.
