Lookout Trail

Overview

This is a punchy 2.1 km/1.3 mi loop that climbs quickly to a broad clifftop lookout with views across several hundred square kilometres of rolling hills, forests, and lakes. Officially rated Difficult due to the grade and rugged tread, it’s still a short outing for a big payoff. The trail’s theme is geology, with interpretive stops that explain how Algonquin’s landscape was shaped.

What to Expect

From the trailhead at km 39.7 on Highway 60, the path heads steadily uphill on crushed stone and rocky sections. Expect steep grades and some loose gravel—most hikers feel the burn on the way up and appreciate the traction on the way down. Trekking poles help on the descent. The loop tops out at a clifftop viewpoint, then swings back down to close the circuit at the parking lot. Plan 30–60 minutes total, plus whatever time you want to linger at the view (most people hang out roughly 20 minutes).

Best Time to Hike

Sunrise or sunset delivers the most dramatic light across the lakes and ridgelines, and fall is prime time for color—but also the busiest. Weekends and midday in autumn can be shoulder‑to‑shoulder, and the lot fills early. After rain or in winter, the tread can be slick; if that’s your window, bring sturdy footwear and step carefully.

Logistics & Tips

A valid park permit is required for day use. Parking is right at the trailhead, just off Highway 60 at km 39.7, but spaces are limited during peak fall color. Wear grippy shoes, pack a layer for the windy lookout, and consider poles. If you want to keep the geology theme going or mix in something quieter, nearby options along the Highway 60 corridor include Big Pines Trail and the Algonquin Visitor Centre. Several campgrounds (Pog Lake, Whitefish Group, Raccoon Lake, Rock Lake) sit within a short drive, making this an easy add‑on hike to a camping trip.
