Lookout Trail's Ridge View“Up ahead is the Lookout Trail, a good choice for a broad forest panorama without giving over half the day. Allow about an hour for the roughly two-kilometre loop, with a steep climb over roots and uneven rock.”

Trail guide
South Lookout is an informal out-and-back from Highway 60 to a rocky ledge with southwest views over forest and distant lakes. The mapped path is about 0.81 mile one way, or about 1.6 miles round trip when you retrace it. One published listing gives 1.7 miles, close to that measured corridor, though its measurement convention is unclear. Allow about an hour; the profile and a separate estimate put the climb at roughly 300 feet. The reward is a broad horizon without committing to a long hike.
The path starts across Highway 60 from the west entrance to the formal Lookout Trail parking lot. That is the nearest identified parking; no separate South Lookout lot is documented. The route is a ground-surface path through woods, with less certain wayfinding than the developed Lookout Trail. It comes near Centennial Ridges, but the bushwhack described in older accounts is not a verified connector; return the way you came. Algonquin Park requires a valid permit for trail use. Because this informal path is not on the park's official trail list and its current access and maintenance are unconfirmed, check with Ontario Parks before setting out.
The path finishes close to a bare rock outcrop looking southwest over the forest canopy toward distant lakes. The view is the reason to come. In mid-afternoon the southwest-facing outlook can put the sun ahead of you; morning light is more likely to leave it behind the view. A strip of the rock ledge in the foreground helps show the drop to the trees below. No trail facilities or specific pet rule were established.
