Trail guide
Shadow Lake Trail is a challenging out-and-back from Redearth Creek Parking Area in Banff National Park. It covers about 17.4 miles (28 km) round trip, climbing through the Redearth valley to the lakeshore beneath Mount Ball. Plan for a full day, roughly 9 to 10 hours with a stop at the lake. You return along the same corridor.
The first stretch follows a wide, tree-fringed former fire road with a gradual, sustained climb. Lost Horse campground is about 7 km from the parking area. Near 10.5 km, take the signed right-hand turn toward Shadow Lake and leave bicycles at the rack; the path briefly steepens, then eases as it continues toward Shadow Lake Lodge and the water. The lake and Mount Ball’s steep, snow-marked east face are the payoff after a long forest approach.
This is a long backcountry day rather than a short stroll from the road. The mapped route ends at the lake approach; a separate, marked lakeshore walk from the Lodge adds about 3 km one way and is not included in the distance above. Bring enough food and water for the whole outing; treat any backcountry water before drinking. The Lodge is accommodation, so arrange a stay in advance rather than counting on it as a day-hike stop.
Parks Canada’s main backcountry hiking season is May through October. Higher trails can hold snow into late June, and summer snow is possible, so carry layers and check the route before setting out. Dogs may accompany hikers on summer trails unless a specific restriction applies; keep them leashed and under physical control. Overnight camping in the backcountry requires a permit and reservation; a Lodge stay is booked separately.
The lower approach crosses avalanche paths near 3.3 and 4.4 km, with overhead exposure along part of the 6.3–8 km stretch. This is a serious winter travel issue: use current avalanche information and appropriate training and equipment before entering that terrain.
