Overview

About Sarbach Lookout Trail

Why go

  • Wide mountain and valley views from a rocky former lookout site

Heads up

  • A steep 2.5 km climb follows the boggy river approach
Sarbach Lookout Trail is a difficult 10.2 km round-trip out-and-back from Mistaya Canyon parking to a rocky former fire-lookout site. It descends into the canyon, follows the Mistaya River through a boggy stretch, then climbs steadily to open mountain and valley views. Allow 4 to 5 hours; the roughly 580 m of climbing makes the uphill effort the point of the outing, not a quick add-on. Choose it for a sustained climb with a wide lookout payoff; skip it if steep uphill travel or wet footing is a poor fit.

From the parking lot, descend toward the canyon and cross the bridge. Climb the bank just beyond it, then take the left, southwest branch at the Sarbach junction; the other branch heads toward the Howse River. About 1.7 km from the start, the route reaches a Mistaya River viewpoint, then leaves the river and crosses roughly a kilometre of bog.

The main ascent begins after the bog, gaining about 370 m over the next 2.5 km. The climb is steep and steady through forest before reaching the rocky lookout; the final 200 m is bordered by rocks. The boggy stretch can be especially wet early in the season, so expect slower footing there.

The viewpoint occupies the site of a former fire lookout. From the rocks, the view opens across surrounding mountains and valleys, including Glacier Lake and Howse Pass. On the river-view stretch, frame the pale water between the tree line and snowy peaks to show the valley's depth.
