Parking

Park in the Sunshine Village base lot, then walk behind the gondola building to the Healy Pass trailhead. The lot has paved and unlined gravel parking, flush toilets, benches and four EV chargers. A Banff National Park entry pass is required; no trail-specific permit or reservation was found for this day hike.

Best time to go

Parks Canada's prime hiking season is July through mid-September. Passes can stay snowbound and avalanche-prone into late June, and most are typically snow-free by mid-July; check the current trail conditions before setting out. The meadows bring summer wildflowers, while the larches turn gold in fall. The timing shifts with the year, so treat those as seasonal windows, not guaranteed shows.

Safety

Long, high-elevation day hike with rocky stretches and two stream crossings. Carry water or a filter because surface water may be unsafe. Alpine passes can remain snowbound and avalanche-prone into early summer. Parks Canada recommends groups of four or more and bear spray. Dogs must stay leashed and under physical control.

Hiking Healy Pass Trail

Healy Pass Trail is an out-and-back from Sunshine Village to an open alpine pass above the Egypt Lake basin. Parks Canada lists 8.8 km each way, or 17.6 km round trip, with a six-to-seven-hour hiking time. The mapped corridor is about 9.1 km each way, and GPS accounts of the outing give longer totals; treat the distance as approximate and leave a full day. The climb is steady rather than a scramble, but the distance and altitude make this a hard day. Do it for the larch meadows and big pass views, not for a scenic walk from the first kilometer. The first several kilometers stay in the trees.

Turn around at Healy Pass for the base day hike. Continuing toward Egypt Lake or other passes is a different, longer backcountry trip and needs its own planning.

The trail leaves from behind the Sunshine Village gondola building, then follows Healy Creek through forest. Much of the approach stays under trees, with a gradual uphill grade, rocky stretches, and two stream crossings. Some hikers find this section repetitive; save your energy for later rather than expecting an alpine panorama right away. At roughly six to eight kilometers from the start, the trees thin into larch-edged meadows. That change is the clearest signal that the pass is getting close.

At the open pass, the view looks toward Egypt Lake, Scarab Lake and Scarab Peak, with high ridges filling the horizon. This is where the long forest approach earns its keep. The trail continues beyond the pass, but don't follow those onward routes unless you're prepared for a longer itinerary. Plan your water for the day: Parks Canada warns that surface water may be unsafe to drink and advises carrying water or a filter.

A good photo frames larches or flowers in front of the ridges; from the pass, aim across the lake basin toward Scarab Peak. This is a signature high-country view, so spend more than a few seconds here before turning around.

Park at Sunshine Village's base lot and follow the approach behind the main building to the Healy Pass trail. The lot has paved and unlined gravel parking, flush toilets, benches and four EV chargers. A Banff National Park entry pass is required; no trail-specific permit or reservation was found for this day hike. Dogs are allowed on summer trails unless a specific restriction is posted, and must stay leashed and under physical control.

This is a long day with no drinking water provided on the route and two stream crossings; bring enough water or a filter. Parks Canada asks hikers in Banff to stay in tight groups of four or more and carry bear spray. The pass is high country, so lingering snow and avalanche conditions can make an early-season outing unsafe.
