Parking

Use Banff Sunshine Village’s large guest parking lot at the gondola base. The trail begins at the upper-village access and requires the seasonal gondola ride; include lift time in your day.

Safety

Open meadows and the high pass offer little shelter from changing mountain weather. Carry enough water beyond Howard Douglas Lake; no reliable onward source is reported. Stay on designated trails. Dogs are prohibited in Sunshine Meadows and at the resort except registered service dogs.

Hiking Citadel Pass Trail

Citadel Pass is a hard out-and-back from Sunshine Village’s upper trail access: 11.3 miles (18.1 km) round trip on the mapped Quartz Ridge route, returning along the same trail. Plan about 6½ hours of hiking, plus the ride up and down. The route crosses open subalpine meadows, descends to Howard Douglas Lake, then climbs through rolling valleys to the pass. It is not technical, but the distance, altitude and repeated ups and downs make it a full day.

Choose the Citadel routeAt the early trail split, follow the branch toward Quartz Ridge and Howard Douglas Lake.

At the early trail split, follow the branch toward Quartz Ridge and Howard Douglas Lake. The Rock Isle Lake circuit is a worthwhile side trip, but it is outside this mapped distance. Longer published totals of 21.4–21.9 km include that loop; one older outing also continued beyond Citadel Pass toward Fatigue Pass. Keep the direct route in mind when budgeting your day. Howard Douglas Lake is a natural shorter turnaround if the final stretch feels like too much.

The route starts at the Rock Isle Road access in upper Sunshine Village and crosses open meadow on an established path. Interpretive signs along this high country explain hummocks, the Continental Divide and why evergreen patches grow above 2,200 m. Stay on designated trails across the fragile alpine ground. At the fork, the Quartz Ridge side leaves the Rock Isle loop behind and heads toward the backcountry.

Quartz Ridge opens a view down to Howard Douglas Lake, with steep peaks beyond. The path descends to the lake and campground, a good place to pause before the harder back half. There is no reliable water source reported farther along, so carry enough for the pass and the return; treat or filter any lake water you collect. The lake also makes a shorter day’s turnaround, though distances vary with the chosen upper approach.

Beyond the lake, the trail dips into and climbs out of two small valleys before reaching Citadel Pass. Citadel Peak frames the high country, and Mount Assiniboine dominates the pass view. Citadel Lake can be easy to miss on the way back, so watch for it as you retrace the route. Wildflowers, mountain bluebirds and Columbian ground squirrels have been reported here, but sightings vary.

Use Banff Sunshine Village’s large guest parking lot at the gondola base; the trailhead is the upper-village access, reached by the seasonal Sunshine Gondola. Build lift time into the day and check the resort’s operating schedule before you go. Dogs are not permitted in Sunshine Meadows or at the resort, including on the lifts, except registered service dogs. The open meadows and high pass have little shelter from changing mountain weather.
