Trail guide
From the Salet boat landing, this is a hard, high alpine loop published at 17.2 km, with about 1,178 m of ascent and descent and an 8½-hour walking estimate. It climbs the Sagerecksteig to Schwarzensee and Halsköpfl, continues to Wasseralm, then returns on Röthsteig past Obersee. The stored line is 15.8 km and published totals for similar lines range from about 14.8 to 17.2 km; plan for the longer figure. Boat travel to and from Salet is extra.
Walk from the landing past Saletalm, then settle in for a long, steep climb on the Sagerecksteig. It has wire-secured, exposed sections and passes the old Sagereckalm site at 1,363 m. The views keep opening back toward Königssee. After Schwarzensee, take the branch for Halsköpfl, a grassy 1,718 m summit with a broad view over the lake, then return to the through trail.
Continue on trail 416 to Wasseralm, a small high mountain hut at 1,423 m. It is self-catering, so do not count on a meal there. The hut is the natural place to break this into an overnight trip; the one-day version calls for a brisk pace. The route makes a short out-and-back from the hut access to join the return trail.
Röthsteig descends to Obersee and Salet. It is another narrow, steep mountain path, with exposed and wire-secured sections. Avoid Röthsteig when it is wet. This is a full mountain day, not a simple lake stroll; if you only want the lower lake scenery, the separate Salet–Obersee walk avoids the exposed summit climb.
Salet is reached by passenger boat from Königssee and has no road access. The service is seasonal, usually late April to mid-October, and the timetable changes. Check the first and last boats before leaving; the hike alone is estimated at 8½ hours, so a one-day return can be tight. Parking is at the fee-paid Königssee terminal. Food and toilets are available around Salet, while Wasseralm is self-catering and its operating season is shorter than the boat season.
The park says its black routes are not suitable for dogs, though dogs elsewhere in the park must be leashed. Take that seriously here: the wire-secured and exposed sections make this a poor route for a dog.
The surrounding peaks are built from marine deposits laid down in the ancient Tethys Sea about 200 million years ago. Later movement of the African plate folded and thrust those layers roughly 140 million years ago. The park’s geology account distinguishes brittle Ramsau dolomite lower down from the Dachstein limestone that forms the high summits and plateaus.
