Jennerbahn: Ride Up for Königsblick“You're nearing the Jennerbahn valley station, where the gondola takes you high above Königssee. I'd choose this on a clear day, when you can enjoy the lake and the Watzmann across it.”

Trail guide
This is a 22.8 km (14.2 mi) out-and-back from Königssee parking to Gotzenalm by Hochbahnweg 493, with a signed side trip to Feuerpalfen. Allow about 8 hours 42 minutes and 1,350 m of climbing. Choose it for a long mountain day: the lower forest is shaded, but the route keeps gaining height until you reach the high pastures and the final switchbacks. The return follows the same route back to the Königssee lot.
Start from the Königssee parking area, pass the Jennerbahn valley station, and continue along the road to the last houses. Turn right onto the Hochbahnweg, marked 493. Its shady forest path rises to a forest road; follow the road right to Königsbachalm. This early stretch is a steady climb, not a flat walk along the lake. The trail continues past Gotzentalalm before making its final push uphill.
Past Gotzentalalm, a long, steep forest road works up the mountain in repeated switchbacks to Gotzenalm. The pasture is about 1,685 m above sea level, a long way from the lakeshore start. This is where the day’s effort adds up: the route is long as well as steep, and the 8-hour estimate leaves little room for a short outing. Take the return down the same corridor; descents toward Kessel or Salet end at boat landings and require a different plan back to your car.
Königsbachalm is a summer stop along the climb. Gotzentalalm has four traditional alpine huts, or Kaser, and a service hut; nine Kaser were recorded there in 1859. The steep upper road begins beyond this pasture. Gotzenalm has a seasonal mountain restaurant and overnight accommodation, with about 100 sleeping places, so check its current operation directly if you are counting on a meal or bed.
From Gotzenalm, follow the signed path for about ten minutes to Feuerpalfen. This is the route’s signature view: Königssee lies far below, with the red-domed church at St. Bartholomä and the Watzmann’s east face beyond it. Give the lookout the extra time. The lake-and-cliff composition is the reason to carry a camera on this otherwise wooded approach.
The start is the Königssee parking area in Schönau am Königssee, not a boat landing on the far side of the lake. The park describes boat descents toward Kessel and Salet as alternatives, but those are different point-to-point outings; this record follows the same-day return to the starting lot. Königsbachalm and Gotzenalm are seasonal summer huts, and no dependable public water refill point was confirmed along this exact route. Inside the National Park, keep dogs on leash and away from grazing livestock.
