Rigby Hill Lookout

Overview

Rigby Hill Lookout is the quick win you want: a short bushwalk to a wild, unfenced vantage over the Grose Valley’s sandstone cliffs and deep wilderness. It sits in the Mount Wilson area of the park and stays blissfully quieter than the blockbuster viewpoints.

The Walk

It’s about a 1.2km return walk (roughly an hour), easy to moderate overall with some uneven ground and a slightly steeper pinch near the top. The track begins at Pierces Pass picnic area off Bells Line of Road. Look for a small, unmarked path leaving from the southern side of the car park—the route becomes obvious once you’re on it.

What You’ll See

From the rocky high point, the panorama opens wide across the Grose Valley, with views toward Perrys Lookdown and across to the Grose River. If you’re comfortable with heights, lower rock ledges near the edge broaden the outlook even more—but there are no rails here, so choose your footing carefully and keep well back from the drop.

Wildlife

Expect typical Blue Mountains birdlife—think lyrebirds, cockatoos, and honeyeaters—with wallabies and lizards possible. Your best chance is around early morning or dusk when the bush is most active.

Conditions and Safety

This is a natural lookout with no built amenities at the top. The cliffs are high and unfenced, and the track can be muddy or slippery after rain. The access road to Pierces Pass is unsealed but usually manageable in a 2WD; watch for potholes after wet weather. Dogs aren’t permitted.

Planning Notes

Check park alerts before you go—track and area conditions in the Blue Mountains change with weather, rockfalls, and fire danger. The Mount Wilson area is generally open, but specific locations may close during poor weather or heightened fire risk.

Best Time to Visit

Pick a clear day for the widest views. Early or late in the day lines up with wildlife activity and a quieter trail. Skip it (or take extra care) right after heavy rain when the track and access road can be sloppy.
