Rigby Hill lookout

Rigby Hill is the high point at the end of a short ridge walk above the Grose Valley, in the Blackheath area of Blue Mountains National Park. From Pierces Pass picnic area, the easy track climbs gently for 1.2 km return; allow about an hour. The much harder Pierces Pass to Blue Gum Forest track starts at the same picnic area if you want a longer outing.

The lookout faces Perrys Lookdown and the Grose Wilderness, with the Grose River below. Sandstone cliffs here rise more than 200 m, and the river is a declared Wild River. For a photo, include the tall cliff at the side of the frame and the far escarpment beyond it; that gives the valley a stronger sense of depth than a close shot of one wall.

The cliffs are unfenced. Stay well back, especially when taking photos, and supervise children. Parking and picnic facilities are at the walk’s start; a single pit toilet is beside the road just before the picnic area. Pets aren’t permitted except certified assistance animals. Reach Pierces Pass from Bells Line of Road, between the Mount Wilson and Mount Banks turnoffs. The area can close in poor weather or fire danger, so check alerts before setting out.
