Overview

Walls Lookout is the north-side window into the Grose Valley: a short, easy-to-moderate walk that drops you onto broad sandstone platforms with nothing between you and a vast amphitheatre of cliffs. It’s the payoff spot when you want the big Blue Mountains vista without the crowds.

What You’ll See

From the cliff edge you’re staring straight across the valley at the long sandstone wall where you can pick out well-known lookouts like Anvil Rock, Perrys Lookdown, and Baltzer Lookout with Hanging Rock. The viewing area is spacious and unfussy—just open rock and huge sky—so you can wander for different angles.

The Walk

It’s about 2 km return from the start near Pierces Pass, typically 1–1.5 hours with stops. The track mixes bush path, natural steps, and rock, finishing on unfenced platforms at the rim. Most people with average fitness will be fine; just watch your footing near drop-offs.

Vibe and Crowds

This one flies under the radar compared to Katoomba and Leura. You’ll often get long, quiet stretches and that hard-to-find sense of space—great for soaking in the view without elbowing for rail space.

Safety and Practicalities

Edges are completely unfenced and can be slick after rain. There are no toilets, water, or services at the lookout; the nearest facilities are back at Pierces Pass. No dogs are permitted on this track.

Wildlife

Typical Blue Mountains bush surrounds the track, so keep an eye out for native birdlife, the odd wallaby, and lizards warming on rock. Early and late in the day are your best chances for sightings.

Best Time to Visit

Late afternoon toward sunset is the sweet spot for photography and softer light across the opposite cliffs. Mornings are lovely too, but the easterly view can be partly screened by nearby rock. Weekdays see the fewest people; weekends are still manageable compared to the busier towns.

What to Bring

Sturdy shoes, water, sun protection, and a layer for wind up on the cliff. A camera or binoculars pay off with the long-range views.

Pros

  • Big Grose Valley views for a short walk
  • Quieter than the headline lookouts
  • Wide rocky platforms with lots of space to explore

Cons

  • Unfenced cliff edges with sheer drop-offs
  • No facilities at the lookout itself
  • Track has uneven rock and steps

Tips

  • Start from the Pierces Pass area off Bells Line of Road.
  • Expect unfenced cliff edges; keep well back in wind or after rain.
  • Bring all the water and snacks you’ll want—there’s nothing at the lookout.
  • Sunset light suits the view across to the opposite cliff line.
  • No dogs allowed on this walk.
