Overview

Just 0.2 miles from the Parkway’s northern start at Rockfish Gap, Afton Overlook is the ceremonial kickoff to your drive. It’s a quick pull-off with parking and a broad look over the valley and the community of Afton below. No trails or facilities here—this is a classic pause, snap, and soak-it-in stop.

What You’ll See

Expect sweeping valley views with distant ridgelines and the patchwork of rural Afton below. It’s especially prized for sunrise, when color washes across the Rockfish Valley and the first light hits the Blue Ridge.

Why It’s Notable

This is the very first overlook on the Parkway, a natural spot for start-line photos and that “we’re really doing this” moment. The surrounding area also threads into local history—travelers (including Thomas Jefferson in 1818) have long funneled through this gap.

Wildlife

Nothing unique is called out for this overlook, but like many Parkway pull-offs you might spot common birds and the occasional deer in the early and late hours.

Nearby Idea

If you want a different angle or it feels crowded, continue a bit farther to Rockfish Valley Overlook for another panorama. The historic Blue Ridge Tunnel trailhead is also nearby (accessed from separate parking areas off the Parkway).

Know Before You Go

  • No restrooms, water, or picnic tables; this is a short scenic stop.
  • Pets are welcome but must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet.
  • Parking is directly at the overlook; entrances are simple pull-in/pull-out.

Best Time to Visit

  • Sunrise is the sweet spot for light and color.
  • Weekday mornings are typically quieter than weekends.
  • Open around the clock; early and late daylight hours tend to be less crowded and better for photography.
