Humpback Mountain Trail

This strenuous 4.2-mile loop combines the rocky Humpback Rocks climb with a quieter section of the Appalachian Trail and returns to Humpback Gap. Start at the Humpback Rocks Trailhead near Blue Ridge Parkway milepost 6, climb the blue-blazed trail to the Humpback Rocks overlook, then follow the signed route onto the white-blazed Appalachian Trail and the historic Old Howardsville Turnpike connector back to the parking area. The loop closes at the trailhead; 4.2 miles is the visitor's total walked distance, not one-way mileage.

The first mile is the demanding part: the trail climbs roughly 700–800 feet over steep, rocky ground with constructed and natural rock steps. Humpback Rocks provides broad views across the Rockfish and Shenandoah Valleys. Beyond the overlook, the Appalachian Trail section is generally smoother and more gradual, with forested ridge walking and additional views before the return connector. Allow about 3 hours for the full loop, with extra time for the overlook and careful footing.

Parking at Humpback Gap is limited and fills early on busy weekends and during peak foliage. If the lot is full, the National Park Service identifies additional parking at the Humpback Rocks Visitor Center and Mountain Farm about 0.2 miles north; walk through the farm and follow the signed approach to the trailhead. Dogs are allowed on leash. The Historic Mountain Farm is a nearby cultural add-on, but it is not part of the stored loop line.
