Humpback Rocks Farm

Overview

A few steps from Milepost 5.8, Humpback Rocks Mountain Farm is a compact, open‑air historic site that drops you into late‑1800s mountain life. The buildings were gathered from nearby communities and assembled here during Parkway construction, creating a faithful snapshot of a self‑sufficient Appalachian farm.

What You'll See

• Log farmhouse, barn, chicken house, hog pen, spring house, root cellar, and rail fencing
• A small demonstration garden with heirloom crops
• Interpretive signs year‑round; in summer, staff often open buildings and demonstrate daily tasks

Why It Stands Out

Instead of tracking down scattered homesteads, you get the full story in one walkable place—how families grew, stored, prepared, and bartered food to make it through the year. It’s an easy, worthwhile stop near the Parkway’s northern start and a great primer before tackling nearby trails.

How to Visit

Start at Humpback Rocks Visitor Center for exhibits and current program times, then follow the short path to the farm. The Mountain Farm Trail is an easy 0.25‑mile loop threading the buildings. Restrooms and drinking water at the visitor center are typically available spring–fall. For a longer outing, pair the farm with the steep hike to Humpback Rocks or other signed trails in the area. Picnic tables are at the separate Humpback Rocks Picnic Area (around MP 8.5).

Wildlife

Expect common forest dwellers—deer, squirrels, chipmunks, and plenty of songbirds—especially in the cooler hours around morning and evening.
