Overview
Humpback Rocks Trail is the classic short, strenuous climb from Humpback Gap to broad views over the Rockfish and Shenandoah Valleys. The trail climbs about 700–800 feet in roughly 1 mile one way; the customary outing is a 2.0-mile out-and-back to the rocks.

Trail guide
Start behind the information kiosk at the south end of the Humpback Gap parking area (Milepost 6.0) and follow the blue-blazed trail. At about 0.4 mile, stay on the official trail rather than the unblazed social path. The route continues through built earth-and-log and stone steps; near 0.9 mile, take the signed 800-foot spur to Humpback Rocks. Follow the blue blazes back to the parking area, especially near the summit where social paths intersect.
This is a steep, rocky, strenuous ascent with benches and steps along the climb. The exposed rocks can be slick, and the summit area is open and windy. Wear appropriate footwear and remain on the constructed blue-blazed treadway to limit erosion and avoid confusing unofficial paths.
Humpback Gap has limited parking and is often full on weekends. Additional parking is available at the Humpback Rocks Visitor Center and Mountain Farm about 0.2 mile north; visitors can walk through the farm, use the back fence crossing, and cross the Parkway to reach the trailhead. Restrooms and drinking water at the visitor center are seasonal. Pets are allowed on a 6-foot leash. The Mountain Farm Trail and Appalachian Trail provide separate optional extensions, but they are not part of this 2.0-mile out-and-back route.
