A classic first stop on the northern Parkway, Humpback Rocks Overlook pairs a dramatic, rocky perch with a dose of Blue Ridge history. The namesake outcrop towers above the road and delivers sweeping vistas over the Shenandoah Valley, the Blue Ridge, and even toward Shenandoah National Park. Right nearby, the Mountain Farm exhibit and the seasonal visitor center round out the visit with culture and context.
From the parking area around MP 5.8–6, the trail to the Rocks is short but no joke: roughly a mile with 700–800 feet of gain. Expect rock steps, a sustained grade, and uneven footing that can be muddy after rain. The summit opens onto broad, craggy ledges with multiple nooks for sitting and soaking up the views—think big, valley-spanning panoramas and prime photo angles.
