Set at milepost 76.5 around 3,950 feet, Apple Orchard Mountain Overlook is all about effortless, high-elevation scenery. It’s the highest overlook along the Virginia stretch of the Parkway, which translates to huge, layered views without leaving your car.

On a clear day you get broad, 180-degree vistas over Arnold Valley and the surrounding Blue Ridge ridgelines. Sunrises here are especially rewarding—the light pours in and paints the folds of the mountains. Clear nights can be good for stargazing and astrophotography, too.

Why It’s Worth a Stop

Short answer: altitude plus convenience. You pull off, step out, and you’re staring at big country. It’s an easy win on any Parkway drive, and a great complement to nearby viewpoints like Thunder Ridge.

This overlook itself isn’t a trailhead, but you’re in prime hiking territory:

• Appalachian Trail to Apple Orchard Mountain (via Thunder Ridge parking): a moderate out-and-back with rocky sections and the quirky “Guillotine” rock passage en route to the summit.
• Apple Orchard Falls (accessed from Sunset Field Overlook): a popular creek-and-waterfall route with stairs and boardwalk near the base.

Wildlife and Seasons

The surrounding national forest supports deer, songbirds and raptors, small mammals, and seasonal wildflowers and butterflies. Fall color can be spectacular—and busy. At this height, expect quick weather shifts; wind and fog roll through often.

Think simple: a roadside pullout with parking and a scenic viewpoint. No restrooms, water, or services here. Parking is small, so have a backup overlook in mind if it’s full.
