Overview
Perched at MP 305.2 near Grandfather Mountain, Beacon Heights Overlook is the quick win of this stretch of Parkway: a short, mostly easy walk to sprawling quartzite rock slabs with big-time views. It’s popular, but still feels like a find compared to the crowded hotspots nearby.
Two broad rock platforms are separated by woods: one faces north/east, the other south/west. That means you can chase sunrise and sunset in the same visit. On clear days, you’ll pick out Grandfather and Grandmother mountains, Table Rock, Hawksbill, and distant ridgelines—sometimes even Linville Gorge and Mount Mitchell. The gently arced quartzite is dotted with shallow rain pools and lichen, and rhododendron blooms add color from May through July.

From the trailhead, it’s roughly 0.3 miles to the top (about a mile round trip if you wander both outcrops). The path is rocky and rooty with a gentle climb of ~100 feet—kid-friendly, but you’ll want real shoes. A bench near the crest marks the split to the two overlooks.
This trailhead also taps into the Tanawha Trail (which parallels the Parkway) and is part of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail network, so it’s an easy add-on stop to a bigger day out. The overlook’s name dates to the 1890s, credited to A. M. Huger.
Expect mountain songbirds flitting around the forest edge, and you might spot a raptor riding updrafts over the cliffs. Larger wildlife is around in the region, but sightings on this short, busy path are uncommon.
