CONS

Overview
Tucked near Grandfather Mountain and the Linn Cove Viaduct at milepost 304.8, Stack Rock is a quirky geologic pillar that breaks up a Blue Ridge drive with a short, satisfying wander. This isn’t an overlook-first stop—the rock itself is the draw—but you’ll still find photogenic moments right from the parking area.
What You’ll See
- The namesake pillar-like formation rising from a mossy, boulder-strewn forest.
- Short paths that thread among massive boulders just off the road corridor.
- From the parking area, a surprisingly nice vista in both directions of the Parkway—especially pretty in autumn when Grandfather Mountain’s slopes light up with color.
The Walk
Expect a very short outing (about 0.4 miles by one route), with uneven footing—roots, rocks, and a bit of downhill/uphill. Most visitors manage it in sneakers, and families often use it as a leg-stretch stop.
Logistics
- Parking is a small pullout signed as the Stack Rock Parking Area (MP 304.8).
- There are no facilities—no restrooms, water, or services—and cell reception can be limited.
- The lot can be muddy after wet weather.
- Open 24 hours.
Wildlife & Plants
Typical high-country forest life: songbirds, squirrels, and deer are possible, with plenty of mosses and seasonal wildflowers around the rock and trail.
Best Time to Visit
Autumn shines here for foliage. It’s a quick-stop kind of place, so plan it as a leg-stretch when you’re passing through; on peak fall weekends, come early or be ready for limited parking.
