Camp Creek Overlook (MP 315.6)

Overview

Despite the name, this “overlook” is really a small paved pull-off at MP 315.6 that trades sweeping vistas for forest ambience and the sound of running water. It’s a low-key stop just north of the Linville Falls area, ideal if you want a breather from the road rather than a big photo op.

What You’ll See

Dense white pine and broadleaf forest wraps around the pull-off, with galax and rhododendron thick along the edge. A clear, rocky mountain stream—Camp Creek—runs below, and you’ll hear it before you see it. The creek parallels the Parkway here and soon feeds the Linville River toward Linville Gorge.

The Short Creek Path

A narrow dirt path starts behind the overlook sign and drops about 400 feet through rhododendron to the water. It’s brief but steep and can be muddy or slippery after rain, so sturdy shoes help. At the bottom you’ll find a quiet spot to sit on rocks, cool off, or cast a line (make sure you’re following Parkway fishing regulations).

History Snapshot

The name comes from the Camp brothers of Chicago, who logged these forests in the early 1900s. What you’re walking through today is lush second-growth—one reason the roadside “view” has long since grown in.

Wildlife

No site-specific reports, but a shaded creek corridor like this typically hosts songbirds and salamanders. The understory is thick—be alert for ticks and poison ivy in warm months.

Is It Worth a Stop?

If you’re chasing panoramic overlooks, skip it. If you want a quiet, shady pull-off with a quick walk to a burbling creek, this is a pleasant, uncrowded detour.

• Time of day: Midday works well since there’s no vista to catch at golden hour; the forest shade is a perk on hot afternoons.
• Season: Spring through early summer is especially green; after rains, the creek sounds great but the path gets slick.
