Sitting right off the Parkway around Milepost 316, Linville Falls Visitor Center is the launchpad for seeing the park’s most famous waterfall and the mouth of Linville Gorge. It’s where you get oriented, grab a map, and choose your route to the overlooks.
You’re steps from diverse vantage points of a dramatic, multi‑tiered cascade that kicks off the “Grand Canyon of the Southern Appalachians.” Few places on the Parkway put so many waterfall views within one trail network.

From the visitor center, well‑marked paths fan out to multiple named viewpoints: Upper Falls, Chimney View, Erwin’s View, and Plunge Basin. If you want a quieter bonus stop, Duggers Creek Falls is a short walk from the parking lot. Trails range from easy to more strenuous with stairs, rocks, and roots—plan your loop based on how much climbing you want.
The surrounding forest features towering hemlocks (with visible impacts from hemlock woolly adelgid), rhododendron, and seasonal wildflowers. Keep an eye and ear out for songbirds and wild turkeys; deer are possible, and black bear sightings are uncommon near the center but not impossible.
Swimming or climbing on rocks around the falls is strictly prohibited due to hazardous currents and slippery surfaces. Trails can be slick after rain—sturdy footwear helps.
